Why Aerate in the Spring?
Spring is the most important time to strengthen your lawn after winter stress.
Core aeration and power raking help break up compacted soil, improve water absorption, and give your grass the airflow it needs to grow thick, green and healthy heading into summer—so when summer drought hits Colorado, your grass is prepared instead of panicking.
Where's Power Raking?
Power raking appointments are fully booked for the Spring season
Power raking is only beneficial to Colorado lawns at certain times of the year. The Spring power raking season is mid-March to mid-May and the Autumn power raking season is September to October.
Aeration Makes a BIG Impact on Colorado Lawns
Aeration works especially well in Colorado because much of the Front Range—including areas like Castle Rock—has dense, heavy clay soil that compacts tightly, restricting air, water, and nutrient movement.
Here’s why it makes a bigger impact here than in many other regions:
1. Colorado Clay Compacts Easily
Clay particles are extremely small and pack together tightly, especially in dry climates like Colorado where soil hardens between waterings. Foot traffic, mowing, and even normal settling turn it into near-concrete.
2. Water Has Trouble Penetrating
Colorado lawns often experience intense sun, dry air, and infrequent but heavy watering. In compacted clay, water tends to run off instead of soaking in—meaning roots stay shallow and stressed.
3. Oxygen Is Limited
Grass roots need oxygen just like we do. In compacted clay, pore space is reduced, limiting airflow underground. Aeration physically opens channels that restore that critical oxygen flow.
4. Stronger Roots Matter More in Colorado
With our temperature swings, drought cycles, and winter freeze/thaw, shallow roots struggle. Aeration encourages deeper root growth, which dramatically improves drought tolerance and resilience.
Why It’s More Noticeable Here
In sandy or loamy soils (common in parts of the Midwest or Southeast), soil naturally has more pore space, so aeration still helps—but the improvement isn’t as dramatic as it is in heavy clay environments like much of Colorado.
Preparation for Drought
Aerating in the spring helps your lawn grow deeper roots, absorb more water, and build strength—so when summer drought hits Colorado, your grass is prepared instead of panicking.
